With the introduction of the 890FX, AMD finished off its 800 series chipset line. There are several advantages the 890FX has over its predecessor the 880FX, all of which we will get into a little bit later. Gigabyte has recently released several 890FX motherboards, including the one we will be taking a look at today.

Introduction

When choosing a new motherboard for my main PC, I had several requirements. The most notable being USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s support. I move a lot of data in and out of my main PC via external hard drives and USB thumb drives, and USB 3.0 will literally save me hours of transfer time. I also wanted a motherboard that could support multiple GPU's for intense gaming performance. Lastly it needed to have more than 5 SATA ports, because as I mentioned above, I move a lot of data around.

Gigabyte was kind enough to send me their GA-890FXA-UD5 AM3 motherboard for testing. This new offering from Gigabyte offers support for AM3 processors up to 140W TDP, 3 way CrossFire X, Sata 6GB/s, USB 3.0, and a very cool feature Gigabyte calls On/Off Charge. If that was not enough, Gigabye has placed all of that technology on their Ultra Durable 5 (UD5) design process. Boasting a bright blue solder mask on the PCB and light blue connectors, the GA-890FXA-UD5 continues the recent Gigabyte motherboard color scheme.
